Nordex Puts Wind in BBC Chartering's Sails
German shipping firm BBC Chartering has transported a consignment of 56 turbines for the Amakhala Emoyeni wind project in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.
BBC Chartering was awarded the contract by wind turbine manufacturer Nordex, the firm responsible for delivery and turnkey installation of the turbines at the wind farm.
Shipment of the components took place across multiple shipping lots between March and August this year. In total 56 turbines, 168 rotor blades, and 50 tower segments were delivered to the site.
The 2.4 MW turbines were shipped from the manufacturer’s facility in Europe, wind blades were shipped from Turkey and tower segments arrived from Indonesia.
The consignments were unloaded at Coega port, South Africa before onward transportation to the Amakhala Emoyeni wind near Bedford in the Eastern Cape Province.
“The project demonstrated again BBC Chartering’s ability to provide the required trading capacity and perform according to the customer’s project plan,” a BBC Chartering spokesperson said.
BBC Chartering utilized a fleet of six heavy-lift vessels to transport the components: BBC Moonstone, BBC Citrine, BBC Maryland, BBC Alabama, BBC Steinwall, and the BBC Rosario.
The South African project is one of a number of wind farm development contracts that Nordex has signed this year. In one week in October the firm signed three contracts for wind farms with combined capacity of 45 MW in Turkey. These projects will require transportation and installation of a total of 16 new turbines and associated components.
