WWL and WWL ALS Move Mining Excavator to South Africa

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics Abnormal Load Services have transported one of the biggest mining excavators from France to South Africa.

Liebherr partnered with WWL and WWL ALS to move its new flagship excavator from its factory in Colmar to its destination in Durban.

The Liebherr R9800 was built for large-scale mining with an operating weight of up to 810 tonnes and an engine output of 4,000hp. This particular machine was sold to Kumba Iron Ore, theleading supplier of high quality iron ore to the global steel industry, WWL ALS said in a statement.

With strict transport regulations in South Africa creating a tight shipping window, it was very important for Liebherr to find a solution to get the excavator to the customer in a safe and efficient manner.

“Any delays in delivery would have an effect on the reassembly of the components, with the potential to suspend production and create costly downtime,” WWL ALS said.

The WWL ALS team in Moerdijk, Netherlands, was responsible for the organization and coordination of the transport and worked closely with WWL. The team implemented a multimodal plan that included road, barge and ro-ro vessel transport.

The largest of the disassembled components measured 11 meters long, 4 meters high and weighed over 100 tonnes. The cargo was  transported overland to the river port in Strasbourg, France. It was then loaded onto a river barge, which arrived in the Port of Zeebrugge on time. With varying heights, several MAFI trailers were used to transfer the excavator components onto WWL’s ro-ro vessel Tortugas, which then sailed to South Africa.
