Mammoet Delivers Algerian Gas Turbine

Dutch logistics and heavy-lift specialist Mammoet has completed delivery of a 400-ton gas turbine generator from the port of Algiers to the Cap Djinet power plant project site in Algeria.

Transportation of the heavy cargo required special planning due to poor infrastructure along the route, which prevented the cargo traveling by road. Damage caused by recent earthquakes had weakened a number of road bridges and Mammoet had to instead transport the cargo by sea barge.

The generator was loaded onto the barge using a 24-axle-line self-propelled modular transporter, or SPMT. The consignment was then secured in place using 400 tons of stools and beams for the 70 kilometer journey to the power plant.

Upon arrival at Cap Djinet the barge was unloaded by SPMT allowing Mammoet to complete the delivery within seven hours.

The generator will be used to power the 672-megawatt plant, which is one of many new facilities under development in Algeria. The government aims to more than double current capacity from 11 gigawatts to about 26 gigawatts by 2022.

Mammoet is headquartered in Schiedam in the north of Holland and provides a range of services from transportation and logistic planning to heavy-lift and crane rental.
