Afriguide Delivers South Africa Helicopter

South African transportation and heavy-lift firm Afriguide Logistics has completed delivery of a high-value helicopter from Durban to Pretoria in the Gauteng Province of South Africa.

The consignment consisted of an Augusta Westland 189 helicopter which weighed 8,300 kilograms and measured 17.6 meters long and 5.1 meters high. The helicopter was delivered to Durban on a Mafi trailer by roll-on, roll-off vessel.

From there the project team at Afriguide oversaw all unlashing and lifting procedures via crane to transfer the load to a road transportation for the 600-kilometer journey.

“The 189 model is a very recent addition to the Augusta Westland range and has very exact handling requirements. For example, it travels with its own special lifting hooks which must be attached to the rotor hub in a specific fashion for crane lifting. The main body of the helicopter is 14.6 meters long by 3.13 meters wide and 4.04 meters high with a weight of nearly 6 tons – which for a civil aviation helicopter is rather large,” Afriguide Director Brad Stephens said.

Afriguide Logistics is headquartered in Durban, South Africa, and provides a range of project cargo services throughout the southern African region. Previous shipments have included outsized mining equipment to Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
