China Eyes African Heavy Equipment Sales
Shipments of China-made construction, earth-moving and mining machinery to countries across Africa may increase this year in the wake of two diplomatic events that signaled strong government commitments to heavy equipment trade.
These events, described recently on the website of heavy equipment manufacturer Sany as two of the 10 most important industry-related news stories of 2015, included a China-Africa trade summit in December and a visit to Sany’s Changsha headquarters in June by African diplomats.
While attending the December summit in South Africa, Chinese President Xi Jinping showed a group of African leaders a model display of a wind farm recently built in Ethiopia with Sany-made wind turbines. Sany has recently expanded from its traditional heavy equipment product line into the wind energy field.
Selling Chinese equipment to Africa was also the focus of visits to Sany’s Changsha-area facilities in June by more than 50 foreign envoys, including some ambassadors to China, from 36 countries June 11-13.
