Mammoet Fits Transformers Into Caves
Dutch heavy-lifting firm Mammoet has delivered and installed a cargo consisting of six transformer units for a hydroelectric power station in Kafue Gorge, Zambia.
The installation process was particularly complex, as each transformer weighed 105 tons had to be installed within deep caves below Kafue Gorge Upper hydroelectric project.
The installation area was located at a depth of 1.2 kilometers and the only access tunnel provided just a few centimeters clearance above the transformers in certain places.
The project team from Mammoet had to operate to a tight deadline to ensure delivery and replacement procedures were completed to schedule and the power station could keep running whilst the old transformers were replaced
The power plant is located in the southern Chikankata district, about 90 kilometers away from the Lusaka, the capital and largest city of Zambia and supplies around 40 percent of the country’s power capacity. The plant is owned and operated by state-owned electricity company, Zesco. This delivery follows the successful replacement of four old transformers by Mammopet at the same site in 2012.
