Mammoet Delivers Alba Offshore Cargo

Heavy-lift specialist Mammoet has performed load-out operations and transport of a delicate cargo for Marathon Oil’s Alba gas field in Equatorial Guinea.

The heavy components for Marathon Oil’s Alba B3 compression platform were delivered to the offshore gas and condensate field 32 kilometers from the capital Malabo in Equatorial Guinea. The components weighed as much as 5,800 tons and measured as much as 40 meters in length.

The consignment included a topside and jacket built in the Netherlands and a flare and bridge built in Equatorial Guinea. The topside was loaded-out first before the remaining cargo was sailed by barge to a second port for load-out of the 2,600-ton jacket.

The project team from Mammoet had to carefully control the ballasting operation to counter tidal variations of up to five meters and keep the partially loaded barge level and in line with the quayside.

The flare and bridge were transported on self-propelled modular transporters, or SPMT, from the construction site in Equatorial Guinea via a difficult route through the jungle. Upon arrival at the port, the flare and bridge loaded onto a barge by a roll-on operation.

All components were installed by Dutch engineering firm Heerema Marine Contractors using a crane vessel and EPC contractor HFG carried out the hook-up and final commissioning.
