ALE Moves Mafuta Ball Mill
Project cargo specialist ALE has transported and installed a new ball mill on the Mafuta Diamond Mining Vessel in De Beers, South Africa.
The vessel is the largest diamond vessel in the world, and the project team from ALE required complex pre-planning to move the 80-tonne ball mill. Dimensional constraints meant that the mill had to be lowered into the vessel at a steep angle and then gently corrected as it cleared overhead obstructions.
“ALE installed two rotational points onto the vessel, before installing two main skid beams onto the rotational point in the vessel whilst keeping the other ends supported by timber on the quayside. The skid shoes were installed to the ball mill frame on the quayside, lifted by crane and placed onto the beams,” a spokesperson for ALE said.
Once positioned the ball mill was skidded into position on the vessel and lowered into its final position. In total, preparation works took three days and movement and installation took a further four days.
