Saudi-Egypt Bridge Plans Progresses
A proposed US$4 billion bridge project connecting Saudi Arabia and Egypt will recoup its costs within 10 years, according to the former Egyptian minister for transport.
The massive construction project is still at the early planning stages, but if successful it would not only drive significant project cargo demand, but also create a useful new route for breakbulk consignments to travel by road between the two countries.
“I inspected the location of the bridge in October 2013, and it will take about three years to complete the project. The bridge will play a very important role in boosting trade in the region, and it won’t take more than 10 years to recover the cost,” Ibrahim Al-Dimitri, former deputy transport minister, told local media.
Details of funding for the proposed project have yet to be agreed, but a technical committee is expected to start preparing for a feasibility study soon. Early plans suggest the bridge could cut travel time between the Kingdom and Egypt to 30 minutes and would form the first bridge-link between Africa and Asia.
